Position: Community Organizer - African/Afro-Caribbean Immigrant Communities

Position summary:

ACIJ is seeking a full-time organizer to lead community organizing within African and Afro-Caribbean immigrant communities in central Alabama.  The organizer will work with a team of fellow organizers and community leaders statewide to connect with immigrant communities, offer workshops, and build leadership.  We seek applicants who can proactively identify and engage with working class immigrants one-on-one and on the neighborhood level. The ideal candidate will be able to work with allies in Latinx, African American, LGBTQ+, and faith communities on intersectional issues. The Organizer will work closely with existing community leaders and staff and report to the Executive Director.  Core work areas include grassroots leadership development, deportation defense, civic engagement, and story collection.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Work with staff, Leadership Council, and Board of Directors to implement the statewide organizing strategy and work plan

  • Run regional parts of campaigns, conduct education events, civic engagement and leadership development activities

  • Participate in cross-movement work with partner organizations and communities

  • Build participation and engagement of African and Afro-Caribbean immigrants in safe community spaces

  • Create opportunities for grassroots members to help define priorities and direction for carrying out ACIJ’s mission and vision

  • Outreach and development of youth leadership, particularly supporting DACA and TPS holders

  • Maintain frequent communication with staff to inform of organizing work and progress

  • Submit weekly organizing work reports to Executive Director, along with schedule of upcoming events

  • Other responsibilities as determined by the Executive Director

 

Ideal qualifications and qualities:

  • Understanding of the issues and policies that affect immigrants, especially in Alabama 

  • Experience building strong relationships with affected immigrant communities and leaders

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and team-building skills

  • Ability to prioritize and be accountable to work plans with limited supervision

  • Willingness to travel across the central region for meetings and events; full-time access to reliable transportation with a minimum of liability insurance coverage

  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including frequent evenings and weekends (with comp time)

  • Experience using GSuite, Zoom, and other virtual platforms
